Difference Between SSDI & SSI

How SSDI and SSI Intersect

Two main types of assistance exist in a Social Security Claim: SSDI and SSI.

  1. SSDI provides support for anyone who is disabled and has a qualifying work history.
  2. SSI considers your age and disability, but your eligibility is based on your limited income and resources.

You may be eligible for SSDI and not SSI, but not all SSDI recipients meet the requirements of SSI.

Benefits Breakdown

SSDI and SSI offer different benefits:

  • SSI recipients often automatically qualify for Medicaid; SSDI recipients qualify after 24 months, or immediately if they have certain medical conditions.
  • SSI’s maximum benefits are $943 (individual) or $1,415 (married). SSDI benefits vary depending on a claimant’s work history and how much they have paid in during their work life.

SSDI vs. SSI Eligibility

SSDI and SSI both provide benefits to disabled individuals. However, the eligibility requirements differ greatly.

  • SSDI is a benefit paid to individuals aged 18-64 who become permanently disabled and have enough qualifying work credits. To qualify, you generally need to have 40 work credits, with 20 being earned within the 10 years prior to becoming disabled. You can earn up to four work credits per year. Additionally, you must be disabled for five consecutive months before you can receive benefits.
  • SSI is a benefit paid to individuals who are disabled, blind, or over the age of 65, and have little or no income and resources. Individuals generally cannot have more than $2,000 in resources, and couples no more than $3,000. Some assets do not count toward this limit, including your home, one vehicle, and personal belongings.

To receive either type of benefit, you must have a qualifying disability and evidence that your condition is severe enough to prevent you from working.
